Correction Letters

If there is a bankruptcy, lien, judgment, personal data, or any other data, including public records you feel is incorrectly reporting on any or all of the credit bureaus, you would input that just like any other negative account.

For public records, you don’t do anything special except instead of “Creditor Name” you would input Bankruptcy, Lien, Judgment, etc. and instead of “Account Number” you would enter in a docket number.

Many states do not report bankruptcies and other public records to the credit bureaus. The credit bureaus often get the information from third parties, so a simple validation letter can remove them. When it comes to bankruptcy, it is important your attorney DOES NOT put the credit bureaus in your petition.

Things that should be considered are:

  1. any addresses that are not current,
  2. incorrect spellings and abbreviations of your name
  3. any  aliases,
  4. wrong suffixes i.e. Senior, Junior, the III etc.
  5. wrong date of birth,
  6. wrong social security number,
  7. any telephone numbers that are not current,
  8. any account numbers that are incorrect,
  9. any employment history not current,
  10. any liens or judgments,
  11. and child support.
  12. wrong creditor (especially if creditor has changed named or gone out of business.

Why do we do this?

Because even the slightest errors are reason enough for them to be removed. After they are removed, any debts associated with the wrong information, or old information are more easily removed.

Nefarious collection agencies buy old debts for very cheap and attach them to your credit report through old addresses, employment, aliases or telephone numbers as a way to “legally” report this new debt.

Also, there is a very real issue of identity theft. old addresses and other incorrect information are regularly used to establish credit where you are never contacted. This is where credit monitoring can be a big help.
